The Clueless Blog Hop (ChatGPT version)

It's been a while since my friends and I did a blog hop...longer than I've had this new website, in fact, so this is the first actual blog post on here! Be sure to visit the other three stops in our grand tour:

Kerrie Olzak--The Clueless Blog Hop

Here's what I'm clueless about...

With age comes wisdom, and I feel like I seem to understand life a little better as I get older. However, with new inventions and technology and ice cream recipes (cottage cheese ice cream, I’m looking at you) blowing up the internet right now, I’m finding “the things I don’t know” exponentially growing by the second.

That said, I’m not one of those middle-aged people who doesn't get technology. I get it, and I use it well enough. And when I don’t, I know who to ask to keep me up to date. That said, ChatGPT is kind of a mindf*ck for me. I mean, like, it could do my job for me. In fact, it could do this blog post for me…hmm…*evil laugh*

So since I know nothing about the world of Open AI chatbots aside from what I learned on an episode of South Park, here’s an overview of how ChatGPT (one of the Open AI chat programs) works…written by ChatGPT itself. I asked it to "write a paragraph about how ChatGPT works":

ChatGPT is an AI-powered language model that uses natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning algorithms to understand and respond to human language in a way that simulates a human conversation. The way ChatGPT works is by analyzing large amounts of text data to learn the patterns and relationships between words, phrases, and sentences. It then uses this knowledge to generate responses to user input that are contextually relevant, accurate, and grammatically correct. Overall, ChatGPT is an innovative technology that is changing the way we interact with machines and opening up new possibilities for communication and collaboration in a digital world.

That was all AI bot writing. Kinda technical and boring, but let’s try it out doing something more interesting. I typed this into the command line: “Write a scene about an author telling a friend over coffee about having writer's block.”

Here’s the AI bot’s response:

Samantha sat across from her friend, Lisa, at their favorite coffee shop, sipping on a latte. Lisa noticed the stress on Samantha's face and asked her what was wrong.

"I've been staring at my computer screen for hours, but I can't seem to write anything. I think I have writer's block," Samantha sighed.

Lisa listened empathetically as Samantha expressed her frustration with not being able to write.

"I just can't seem to come up with any good ideas," Samantha said. "I feel like everything I write is terrible."

Lisa nodded sympathetically and reached across the table to comfort her friend. "Don't worry, Sam. Every writer goes through this at some point. Maybe you just need to take a break and come back to it later with fresh eyes."

Samantha smiled, feeling reassured. "Thanks, Lisa. Maybe you're right. I'll try taking a break and see if that helps."

The two friends continued to chat, and Samantha felt grateful for Lisa's support. Though she still had writer's block, she knew that she could count on her friend to be there for her whenever she needed a listening ear.

Uhhh…okay that’s just creepy. I’m not saying it’s particularly well-written or gripping in any way, but I’ve read worse scenes written by human authors. That’s a point in ChatGPT's favor, I’m afraid.

Surely it can’t write a banger country song about “a woman finally getting revenge against her cheating boyfriend,” right? Let’s see…

Verse 1:

I caught him red-handed with another girl

In the back of his pick-up truck, my whole world unfurled

I cried and begged him to stay, but he just laughed and drove away

Now I'm picking up the pieces of my heart, wondering how to make him pay

Chorus:

But revenge is sweeter than whiskey on a Friday night

And I won't rest until I make him feel my pain and see my light

I'll break his heart and make him regret every single lie

Revenge is mine, and I'll make him pay until the day I die

Verse 2:

He thought he could cheat on me and get away with it

But little did he know, I'm not one to take a hit and sit

I started hitting the gym and dressing to kill

I'll show him what he's lost and make him feel the chill

Chorus:

But revenge is sweeter than whiskey on a Friday night

And I won't rest until I make him feel my pain and see my light

I'll break his heart and make him regret every single lie

Revenge is mine, and I'll make him pay until the day I die

Bridge:

He'll see me with another man, and he'll feel the jealousy burn

He'll realize that he lost the best thing he ever had and he'll yearn

But it'll be too late, I'll have moved on and found true love

And he'll be left with nothing but regret and an empty glove

Chorus:

But revenge is sweeter than whiskey on a Friday night

And I won't rest until I make him feel my pain and see my light

I'll break his heart and make him regret every single lie

Revenge is mine, and I'll make him pay until the day I die

Outro:

I may have loved him once, but now I'm done with that game

I'm a strong, independent woman, and I won't take his blame

He can keep his sorry excuses and his wandering eye

Revenge is mine, and I'll make him pay until the day I die.

Eek. That had some decent Carrie Underwood/Miranda Lambert-style sass. I mean, there’s some weird stuff in there (an empty glove, WTF?) but for the most part it’s not a bad first draft of a song. I love the line “He can keep his sorry excuses and his wandering eye.” In fact, I might just use it. If a chatbot isn’t real, it can’t claim you plagiarized it, right?

JK, I’m not going to start using ChatGPT to do my writing for me. Okay, so I used it to do most of this blog post for me, but that was an object lesson. AI chatbots can do some pretty amazing things, but I think I’ll stick with writing on my own, because that is one thing I DO know.
